Sweetness is a
dog who needs someone to just let her be a dog, yet be a strong owner willing
to have the patience needed for this girl to feel secure and learn to trust in
a new place. It has taken her a long time to settle into her foster home
because, no doubt, of her past. She is terrified of going in the car and
shakes the whole time she is inside of one. She is very food defensive/possessive
and needs to be fed away from other dogs. Any chewies need to be limited
to when it is quiet time in her crate, such as a bedtime treat. She does
play with the other cocker in her foster home--they romp and play tug of
war with toys and get along beautifully --as long as no food or treats
enter the picture.
Sweetness will only be allowed to go to a home with no children under young adult age as she simply can not deal with the "excitement” and changes that go on in a house with children. Her perfect home would be with an older person or stay at home person who is a strong dog owner. It can take her a good half hour to approach someone new in her environment and she should not be pressured into “saying hi” or such as that since she will become defensive out of fear. When you let her approach on HER terms she loves to be petted and loved on.
This little girl will need to be mildly sedated for grooming, so it would be a good idea for her new owner to use a vet with an onsite groomer who has the tenderness to accept a little furgirl’s fears and work to ease them in a loving manner. She does not like to have her feet touched so nail clipping must be done during the grooming while she is sedated.
Sweetness is housetrained, but in her foster home if her foster mom leaves the bedroom door open Sweetness will go in there and tinkle, so that door has to stay shut. Who knows why this takes place, but keeping an eye on her and using the crate while out of the house prevents this issue. Sweetness is very well crate trained. She eats her dinner in the crate and stays in there until the food is gone. When the food is gone she will happily come out once you open the door. She sleeps in her crate at night and goes in without a fuss when foster mom needs to be out of the house.
If you are the kind of person who wants to give a precious, easily frightened dog the safe harbor of a loving home, please consider this girl. She truly is a gentle loving soul who needs to be accepted despite her issues. All of those behaviors are the kind which can be worked on over time to ease the fears causing them by someone with the desire to do so.
